DESCRIPTION:The Blind Dinner Date Fundraising Event was held outside at the Roanoke Farm for Kids in Lowell. It turned out to be a beautiful evening.  There were over 100 people in attendance and over $28\,000 was raised. The awardees were very appreciative and humble.  The food and DJ all added to a successful event.  The proceeds from this event go to ABVI and Cherry Health Vision Services\, which include the GR Lions Vision Clinic\, Special Eyes Program and See to Succeed Program.  Hope to see you next year!  Enjoy the pictures! \nVision in Action Award: Honoring a non-medical individual in the Greater Grand Rapids Area who had made significant contributions in their career or through volunteer efforts to reduce avoidable blindness &/or provide quality of life support to those with vision loss \nRecipients: Joy Fountain & Carol Lillie-Dausman \nRising Star Award: Honoring a younger adult with severe vision loss whose independence and confidence are growing and who is showing evidence of a promising future and demonstrating their ability to thrive in a sighted world \nRecipient: Cassaundra Wolf \nDr. Mark Sheldon Lifetime Achievement Award: Honoring a distinguished individual who has made vision improvement and vision loss elimination their passionate life’s work.  This individual demonstrates dedication and unselfish contribution especially with those from economically challenged areas in our community \nRecipient: GR Lion Richard A. DESCRIPTION:Please plan on joining us for lunch & our speaker from 12pm – 1:30 pm. \nDino Newville\, a four-time world kickboxing champion\, will be our speaker on October 19.   Newville recently announced he’ll be back in the ring on Nov. 6 at the DeltaPlex Arena in Walker\, where he will compete for the first time in 21 years. The Grand Rapids native will box Rocky “Hawaiian Nightmare” Smith in a four-round exhibition.  This is Smith’s first bout in 18 years. \nThe 61-year-old Newville is trying to recapture his glory days\, which began in 1981 when he achieved his first world title. Newville now operates Blues Gym of Grand Rapids\, a faith-based organization that provides boxing\, kickboxing and martial arts training to “at-risk” youth in West Michigan\, as well as provide spiritual leadership. \nNewville said hard economic times due to the COVID-19 pandemic have made the operation of his non-profit gym even harder. This boxing event is dubbed Last Call @ 61.  All proceeds go to Blues Gym. 4248 Kalamazoo Ave.\, SE. \nNewville said\, “we’re doing this for the kids. I’m not fighting for myself. DESCRIPTION:When someone is diagnosed with a condition that will result in a loss of sight or blindness\, their responses are not only emotional in nature – anger\, frustration\, fear\, and loss – but also include real questions about how to maintain an independent life. Now in our 108th year\, the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ABVI) provides vision rehabilitation services to people of all ages with severe vision loss\, teaching them how to remain active and self–sufficient! Here is some “in–cider” information…. Crafting Vision 2021 is coming! This year\, our event takes place on Thursday evening\, October 28\, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at Vander Mill Tap Room and Restaurant\, 505 Ball\, NE\, Grand Rapids\, 49503. This is a casual\, interactive experience right on the production room floor! There will be hearty appetizer fare\, drinks including hard and soft ciders\, as well as the opportunity to learn more about ABVI… and some surprises! Sound “a–peel–ing?” Your support will help an employee learn how to use adaptive equipment to remain active at work…and the parent cook again for their family when they never thought they would…and the student learn how to use the white cane to be independent and to utilize public transportation…and so much more!
