SUMMARY:GR Lions Luncheon Tuesday Sept 10\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:Come hear Mike Murray\, Retail specialist with Colliers International\, and Shari Veldman.  They will speak to us on Tuesday\, Sept 10\, 2019. \nMike Murray is a retail specialist with Colliers International\, and has been with the company since 1996. His honesty and attention to meeting client’s needs has been his primary asset in providing real estate services. Mike takes great pride in using his market knowledge to serve his clients. Mike was immediately drawn into the retail aspect of commercial real estate. One of his first projects was the redevelopment of a shopping center in Kentwood\, Michigan. His dedication to the development of retail in this particular area of Kentwood has led to continued new retail development. As a result\, he secured an account from one of the nation’s top ten apartment developers\, advising them in the sale of their excess land along the South Beltline. Clients who have purchased the property have been the 16-screen Celebration! Cinema\, Pizzeria Uno\, Steak & Shake\, and Bob Evans. When working with Mike\, it is easy to see that he has a passion for retail in West Michigan. He is currently working with retailers\, developers\, sellers and landlords throughout the greater Grand Rapids area. \nMurray served the Commercial Alliance of REALTORS as President in 2018.  He has also served on several committees and task force groups within CARWM. \nShari Veldman is the Executive Director for the Commercial Alliance of REALTORS\, a position held since 2006.  She has worked within REALTOR association groups for 21 years\, spending time as the marketing/education director for the residential association.   Veldman also served as the DDA Marketing Director and Chamber of Commerce Director for the City of Coopersville. \nIn 2009 Veldman earned the REALTOR Certified Executive (RCE) designation from the National Association of REALTORS.  She currently serves on the Commercial Committee for N.A.R.\, and is Vice-Chairperson of the Educational Forum.   Veldman coordinated the Commercial Leadership Forum held in Chicago in August\, and is working on curriculum for the National  Association Executives Institute’s Commercial courses\, which she will teach in March. \nAt the state level\, Veldman represents the 42 Association Executives as an RPAC Trustee\, and has served on various state committees and task force groups. \nAn avid football fan\, Veldman expects to once again be disappointed in her beloved Detroit Lions. \n12:15-1:30 \nUniversity Club\,  5/3 bldg (top floor)\n111 Lyon St NW\nGrand Rapids MI 49503 \n  \nAs always free parking

SUMMARY:Feb 12\, 2019 Luncheon Speaker\, George Bayard\, Grand Rapids African American Museum & Archives
DESCRIPTION:The Grand Rapids African American Museum & Archives (GRAAMA) showcases more than 30 years of community building and art collecting by a group of individuals dedicated to African American history and culture. The leader of the project isour speaker today\, George Bayard\, is an art gallery owner and collector whose personal mission fueled the museum.\nFor Mr. Bayard\, it all started with a person and a place. The person was his grandmother when she became ill\, He took over the running of her household and soon found himself discovering “tons of things\,” he says\, including photos\, furniture and clothing all related to African American history. he has said\, “That kind of got my whistle wet as far as collecting things\,” and he found himself inspired by the cultural history contained in the thousands of objects he found in his grandmother’s home.\nThe place was the inspiration was his hometown\, Dunleith Estates\, a suburb of Wilmington\, Delaware. Described by Mr. Bayard as 99 percent African American and a home to returning veterans\, the town was “rich in arts and culture” and laid the foundation for his later career in the arts. He went on to major in art education at the University of Delaware\, after which he ran a slew of art galleries in Philadelphia and founded the Bayard Gallery in Grand Rapids following his move to the area in 1988. Despite initial opposition and the commonly held opinion that “black art will never sell in this town\,” says Mr. Bayard\, his gallery and friendships continued to grow.\nWaiting for the perfect timing and location\, Mr. Bayard finally utilized years of education and collecting to set up shop at an empty spot in the Monroe Center retail space. “We were very thrilled when we heard we were going to move into here\,” he says. Though serving only as a temporary location while Bayard searches for property on which to construct a new building\, he hopes that GRAAMA will soon be “a place that people go for information” on African American history and culture\, he says.
